Hopscotch Music Festival 2016 – Day 3

Hopscotch Music Festival 2016 Day 3 – Saturday, September 10th, 2016 Downtown Raleigh I say it every year, but this year it might actually be true: This is my last Hopscotch. It’s not that Hopscotch is anything other than the best curated and executed music festival in the Southeast, but rather that a 3-day festival is a younger man’s game. I was ready to go home midway through Day 2 but I knew there were still some gems to be […]

Hopscotch Music Festival 2016 – Day 2

Hopscotch Music Festival 2016 Day 2 – Friday, September 9th, 2016 Downtown Raleigh I am really proud of myself for my Hopscotch 2016 – Day 1 recap. I paid attention, took insightful notes, and came away with a solid piece. Then I threw all that out the window for Day 2 as I simply meandered about the city with no real destination in mind. Converge performing at Hopscotch 2016 at The Lincoln Theater in Raleigh North Carolina

Hopscotch Music Festival 2016 – Day 1

Hopscotch Music Festival 2016 Day 1 - Thursday, September 8th, 2016 Downtown Raleigh As another muggy North Carolinian summer begins to wind down, the town of Raleigh begins to amp up for the annual Hopscotch Music Festival. I got the call from my partners in crime, Lan and Yang, late in the afternoon. They were headed downtown to check out some day parties, one facet of the Hopscotch experience in which I seldom partake. Yes, they are free, fun, and [...]

Record Review: Noah Gundersen – “Carry the Ghost”

Noah Gundersen – Carry the Ghost Dualtone – 8/21/2015 I narrowly missed the 1-year anniversary of this release which reminded me to finally post my review of one of the best records of 2015. -Ed. Critics strive for objectivity. Noah Gundersen’s 2015 heart-wrenching pain-fest Carry the Ghost makes me throw all objectivity out the window and I don’t even care. I would gladly mortgage my entire reviewing career [Editor’s Note: “Career.”] just as long as Noah keeps making records of […]

Modest Mouse performing at Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary, North Carolina

Brand New & Modest Mouse @ Koka Booth

Brand New / Modest Mouse Wednesday, July 6, 2016 - Koka Booth Amphitheater RDU Music braved the steamy, near-ceaseless heat of a North Carolinian summer day in order to attend our second outdoor amphitheater show of the season: a co-headlined affair between transcendental post-pop-punkers, Brand New, and weirdo-indie-rock darlings, Modest Mouse. Photographer extraordinaire Lan was able to secure a photo pass for the night which turned out to only be valid for Modest Mouse's portion of the evening. We, as [...]
The Good Life at Cat's Cradle Backroom

The Good Life @ Cat’s Cradle (Back Room)

Saturday, August 29, 2015 Touring with The Good Life must be a nice change of pace for Tim Kasher. He doesn't have to be quite as "Tim Kasher-y" as he does when he plays with Cursive. The Good Life has always been the pensive, maudlin, falling-off-the-barstool, drunken younger brother of Cursive. The senior got all the girls because his heart was broken in a cool, rock 'n roll sort of fashion, whereas the junior's broken heart was more pathetic in [...]

Of Montreal @ Lincoln Theater

Of Montreal / Mothers Tuesday, August 25, 2015 Lincoln Theater, Raleigh — Art is hard. And it can also be very stupid. If you don’t have the chops to craft something as breathtaking as Monet’s Water Lilies or as haunting as Bruegel’s Triumph of Death, I guess the next best thing is to have your friends masquerade as big-titted, patriotic, poodle pugilists and parade them around the stage only to be stripped and motorboated by Abraham Lincoln mashups of Spiderman’s […]

The Antique Hearts @ Deep South

The Antique Hearts @ Deep South

Home town heroes The Antique Hearts performed last night at Deep South in downtown Raleigh. Their blend of Americana, Country and Rock was a refreshing change of pace to much of the local scene here in the Triangle. Soulful and thoughtful the guys played well into the night, bringing a modern flair to the styles of some of the American greats. We will make sure to keep you in the loop about upcoming local shows.
